Emily began the series in November 2024 as a reaction to a growing, ominous feeling about the state of mankind. Wildfires are often started by a hidden buildup of insidious debris catalyzed by a spark recklessly applied by an unnatural force. Our current social climate of overconsumption, marginalization and misinformation is the debris of the human soul collecting on the ground of our culture.
The metaphor only became more powerful in the face of a series of actual wildfires, caused in no small part by our participation in an economy that incentivizes destroying our planet. As we race toward the possible end of the anthropocene era, what will we leave behind?
The title of this show is inspired by an article featured in The Point magazine.
